Connolly x Her.o

A Letter From Isabel

Six months ago, I saw a photograph of a coat that Lulu Guinness had ordered – a beautiful embroidered work of art, and she told me that it had been made by two designers called Her.o in Pimlico. When I went online, I was so excited as they specialise in handcrafted, sustainable knitwear, using repurposed and recycled fabrics, sustainable yarns and leather dedicated to slow fashion but not like anything you have ever seen. We went to visit the couple, Alice Smith and Lee Farmer, in their studio, and it was one of my most memorable moments of being in retail; they are artists of knit, in the way of Azzedine Alaia.

“Some of our knitted pieces are embellished with leather. The garment is fully fashioned with engineered holes. Once the piece is knitted and finished, it is hand threaded with cut stripes of leather repurposed from vintage leather coats. For our knitted dresses, cut strips of mesh fabric and lycra are hand laid into the base as it is being knitted. This method is done during the process of fully fashioning and shaping the garment to create a textured and unique fabric,” says Alice of their process and practice.

Designed and made not even two miles from the Connolly shop on Clifford Street, Her.o has worked on eight silhouettes for us. Each piece is made by hand and sold with its own painted illustration by Lee. This limited edition capsule collaboration is designed in a truly sustainable way and woven and knitted to cover your curves in the way God intended.

I am not really sure what this has to do with our Connolly automotive heritage, except that these pieces will appreciate in value, like a classic car. And the beauty of the lines and the craftsmanship and design know how come together perfectly in each dress. Both speak of a glamour and uncompromising elegance that never date or can be replicated, and both make you feel like a star in them.
